Formatted contents note Side 1: Early years, education, writing a novel on top of Mount Mitchell, 1920 goes to Harvard to study English, Dexter scholarship to travel to England, Kitteridge, Sheldon Fellowship to England 1929, North East Scotland, Bell Duncan, collecting methods, renewed Sheldon Fellowship, wrote articles about sailing ships and shanties, collecting experiences, Cornwall, Scotland, Barry Docks, taken for a German spy, appendicitis and other illnesses, writing more articles, needed money, folk plays -- Side 2: Back from England 1935, lectures at universities, went to Duke 1938 to teach and work on ballads with a typist, music transcription, William and Mary for a year, Greensboro Methodist women's college, teaching Shakespeare, student life at Oxford, retirement 1954, writing songs, Taught himself to transcribe music in 1935 because trained musicians couldn't, transcription technique.
